Discover the many hiking trails leading to Machu Picchu and beyond in the mountainous region of Cusco, Peru.
Day 1: The beginning of the journey The adventure begins with the tourist transport to kilometer 88 of the Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes train line, where the trek to the legendary Machu Picchu begins. The first stop is the Qoriwayrachina sector, located at 2,498 meters above sea level. After crossing the Urubamba River, the trail passes through a eucalyptus forest, revealing the archaeological site of Llactapata before reaching the village of Huayllabamba for the first camp.
Day 2: The mountain challenge The second day presents a more intense challenge, with a steep ascent to the highest point of the route, the Abra Warmihuañusca, at 4,650 meters above sea level. The descent leads to the discovery of archaeological sites such as Runkurakay and Sayaqmarka, culminating at the Pacaymayo camp.
Day 3: A lighter trip The third day brings a less demanding route, mainly downhill and full of vegetation. Highlights the visit to the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca and the arrival to Wiñayhuayna, where you can camp according to availability.
Day 4: Arrival to Machu Picchu The last day starts early for the final trek to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, the Intipunku. Once there, a tour guide accompanies visitors on a tour of the majestic site, exploring its main buildings and monuments. The return trip to Cusco is by train and minivan.
A comfortable alternative For those with less time, the 2-day Inca Trail offers a shorter but equally exciting option. The journey begins in Ollantaytambo and continues to kilometer 104 of the railway, where the hike to Wiñayhuayna begins. On the second day, travelers explore Machu Picchu before returning to Aguas Calientes and, finally, Cuzco.
Other important information The Inca Trail is a unique experience that should be booked in advance through tourist agencies. The dry season, from May to October, is the most popular for hiking, while February is reserved for maintenance. Payment includes entrance to Machu Picchu, which makes this trip even more special.
