Geographic Facts about Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca
Location: Situated in the heart of the Cusco region, Peru, Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, is a natural gem in the Andes Mountain Range.
Altitude: Rising to about 5,200 meters above sea level, this marvel is located near the majestic Ausangate Mountain, the highest point in Cusco at 6,384 meters.
Geological Formation: The mountain’s fascinating color palette is the result of minerals deposited in its rocks over millions of years, creating stripes of vibrant tones such as red, pink, green, yellow, and turquoise.
Access to Vinicunca: It’s an adventure in itself, as you can only reach it on foot or horseback, traveling a 6-kilometer trail from Pitumarca, a small town about 3 hours by car from Cusco.

Wildlife: Along the way, you’ll be accompanied by local wildlife, where it’s common to see alpacas, llamas, and native birds such as Andean geese and doves.
We’ll start our exciting journey to Rainbow Mountain by picking you up at your hotel. Depending on the time you choose, the schedule is as follows:
Our first stop will be the town of Cusipata, located at 3,339 meters above sea level, where, after a 2-hour drive, we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast. Afterward, we’ll continue for another hour by minivan to Pitumarca, at 4,450 meters above sea level, where the real adventure begins: riding ATVs to Rainbow Mountain, the second most visited destination in Peru after Machu Picchu.
Once we reach the mountain, you’ll have time to admire the stunning natural colors and soak in the energy of this unique place, without worrying about physical exertion. After this unforgettable experience, we’ll ride the ATVs back to Pitumarca, where we’ll take the minivan back to Cusipata. There, a delicious buffet lunch will be waiting for us.
